Below is a summary of some employer updates to be aware of for 2023:
- CA’s minimum wage was increased on January 1st to $15.50 per hour.
- Small agricultural employers are required to pay overtime after 9 hours per day or 50 hours per week (for small Ag employers with 25 or fewer employees)
- The Cal-OSHA COVID-19 Prevention non-emergency regulations are in effect until February 3, 2025
- CA employers with 5 or more employees are now required to provide 5 days of unpaid bereavement leave, and should update their handbooks accordingly.
- If your employee handbook includes any of the following sections, they have revisions for 2023:
- CFRA – Update language for “designated person”
- Paid Sick Leave/PTO – Update language for “designated person”
- Harassment, Discrimination & Retaliation – Update language for “reproductive health decision making”
- Prohibited Cell Phone – Update for new “emergency conditions” requirement under CA law.
- Covid-19 Policies – Should be reviewed.
